After applying patch "EBF9678.tgz" srvbuild hangs

Hi
I am new to the forum and yet have a tricky question:

short version:

After applying Sybases latest patch "EBF9678.tgz"
srvbuild hangs at creating the Database servers.

longer version:

Here it is

I ve just unloaded Sybase ASE 11.9.2 on Linux Redhat 7.1 and
wanted to install the servers using srvbuild as user sybase.
Everything looked fine so far.

Then it came to my attention that there is a PATCH, called "EBF9678.tgz", which should have installed beforehand.

SO I shutdown the freshly created servers, uninstalled all Sybase RPMs, downloaded the patch and started from scratch.

This time I applied the patch BEFORE running srvbuild and then
did the very same things I did before the patch.
Here comes: srvbuild just HANGS after starting the Server.

Usually it goes ahead and creates Backup, Monitor and XP Server
and then wishes me a good day, after starting Backup too.
But here it just hangs.

I have no clue where to look for errors, for I do not get *any*.
When uninstalling the whole bunch and unloading without the patch
everything works fine.

I have to confess I am completly clueless as to where I might find a hint
what went wrong ;(

Thanks for any help, hints or resources you can provide,
Otto Reim

Hi Otto and welcome to the forums!

I have a feeling you're applying the patch incorrectly -- as far as I know you can't apply the patch BEFORE having servers created (because it needs to alter master and other databases).

Try installing ASE then applying the EBF. Also, 9678 is not the latest EBF -- EBF 9896: 11.9.2 ESD #4 is.

re:patch problems

Hi Matt

Thanks for giving such a fast response.
I got around the problem by saving the old version
of srvbuild, applying the patch (rpm -ivh ...) and then
copying the old srvbuild(res) back.

That did the trick-but what I gather from your reply
worries me a little.

First-I was of the opinion its just there to fix some issues,
no matter if there is yet a server or not.

Second-I was looking for the latest patch and did only find
the aforementioned patch. Could you please point me to the
URL of the newer version (EBF 9896).

Thanks a lot in advance,
Otto Reim

Otto,

Applying a patch does not simply mean upgrading binaries. It also involves doing the installmaster, instmsgs etc.. these updates system procedures and in some cases updates errors.

So it is highly unlikely that you can apply any ASE EBF sucessfully without having to build a server.

Thanks Willy,

Yes I am aware of that.
However I freshly installed that machine/sybase
and wanted to apply the patch before I start creating
any databases at all.

In that case I figured that patching it right away before
starting svrbuild.

O.R.
